The site and the brief

Not every project starts with a bare site. At Paton Road the brief was to renovate and extend an existing home, and to give the new living spaces a heart: a double-height stacked-stone chimney with a double-sided firebox, standing free in the middle of the vaulted room.

Designed Around One Table

Renovations reward the same discipline as new builds. The designer, the engineer and our team worked through the existing structure together, so the new vaulted space, the glazed gable end and the masonry centrepiece were resolved before demolition began.

Built in the Open

The project ran on our open-book promise: labour invoiced fortnightly with timesheets attached, materials and subtrades monthly with the supplier invoices attached.

On renovation work, where surprises can hide in old walls, that transparency matters twice over.

The result

A light-filled, vaulted living space wrapped around the stone: fire on both sides in winter, garden views through the new glazing in summer, and a home that feels built around the way its owners live.

Good questions

Paton Road, answered.

Was Paton Road a renovation or a new build?

A renovation and extension of an existing home, not a new build from a bare site, which is why open-book transparency mattered twice over: surprises can hide in old walls.

What is the double-sided stacked-stone fireplace?

A double-height stacked-stone chimney with a firebox open on both sides, standing free in the middle of the new vaulted living space so the fire can be enjoyed from either side of the room.

What is the living space like at Paton Road?

A light-filled, vaulted living space with a glazed gable end, wrapped around the stone fireplace so there is fire on both sides in winter and garden views through the new glazing in summer.

Does the Paton Road renovation have heat-recovery ventilation?

Yes, part of the same airtight, well-detailed approach we bring to every renovation, alongside Pro Clima airtightness.
